The Paramore Paradox: Why Hayley Williams Can't Leave the Band That Made Her Famous -by Dan Gibson

Hayley Williams says she's not leaving Paramore. Even though she sang the hook on B.o.B's "Airplanes," one of the biggest songs of the summer, and seems perfectly set up to stop splitting Paramore's paychecks five ways, you have to take her at her word.

Why? Because Paramore is possibly the least controversial band in the world.

Maybe it's their crypto-Christian rock background or maybe it's a new era of musical acts that have abandoned the debauchery of previous eras. If you're looking for some juicy angle on Paramore, good luck. Can a band whose antics inspire yawns still hold up the musical end of the rock 'n' roll bargain?

A recent Spin feature on the band made a big deal out of how boring the band is on the road, but was that a big revelation? Even without the one-girl-and-a-bunch-of-guys dynamic, nothing about Paramore screams that they're likely to provide any material for a Hammer of the Gods/The Dirt-type tour exposé. They post videos online capturing a pickup soccer game in a hotel parking lot, after all. As journalists, maybe we want scandal and excitement because it's easier to write about.

Hayley Williams' blog rebuttal to the Spin article wondered why people can't just focus on the band as a whole. There's no big secret there: Put Williams' pic on the cover and copies fly off the newsstand, but the story inside? Kinda dull.

The nature of Paramore's "360" deal with Warner Music and Fueled by Ramen (the band gets extra promotion and other marketing considerations from the label in exchange for a cut of tour and merch action, which the band usually would keep for itself) is interesting in a industry-wonk sort of way, but that's not likely to fly with Spin readers. Maybe a band can be fun to listen to and nothing else. The Paramore show at the Dodge will likely be passionately energetic, they'll play a few acoustic numbers that will dull their appeal to anyone but the diehard fans, and they'll finish with the big hits. What more is there to ask from a band?

On Paramore's Facebook page, merch is paramount — T-shirts and links to exclusive merchandise sold at Hot Topic and Target are the first things you see. It's this kind of retail redirection that explain why Williams is likely to stay with the band. Paramore has more marketing power as an emotionally meaningful rock act with a dynamic lead singer than does Williams as solo act with a little edge and a little style but a boring personal life. When the band is at its best, playing hook-laden guitar pop, the songs are fun — despite lyrics seemingly pulled from the back of her fifth-period social studies notebook. Paramore offers fans the opportunity to be cute and still have feelings.

At least for the time being, the pop charts demand from women a variation on sorta-subversive-but-not-really sexual provocation. Katy Perry shoots whipped-cream jets from her bra, Ke$ha tells stories of waking up in gutters, and Lady Gaga throws the wildest fantasies of every drag queen with a cabaret act into a blender to see what comes out. Williams had a vaguely salacious topless Twitpic leak and is dating a guy from New Found Glory. That's just not going to be enough scandal to make it on her own.

Edit: Hayley's response on her Tumblr about this article...

Article informing everyone that Paramore actually care about music.

This, my friends, is what’s wrong with the music business. It’s not that I don’t shoot whipped cream out of my bra. It’s the fact that anyone had to do it in the first place. So thank you, dear journalist, for writing this article. Now, everyone knows that what is important to us are the songs we write and people we write them for.

So basically they're saying that popularity is all about scandal and sex appeal? Outstanding.

Also, calling Hayley boring is like calling a sports car slow.

while i can see hayley going solo someday, i don't think this is the reason she's still with paramore currently.

Well, this is all kinds of stupid. I liked GaGa and Katy not because of their outlandish personalities or sexuality, can't people like artists for their music?

Same with Paramore. This person is a hater and needs to be shaken off.

[info]fabianalu11

September 9 2010, 02:11:43 UTC 1 year ago

Why on earth she wants to be a solo artist? she is like a sister to the boys, what a heart break would be, don't you think? besides that journalist doesn't know Hayley like us, their fans. We should write to that journalist, and tell him the true! all what he wrote is a total bullshit, just saying.

Just because Paramore/Hayley (as the article seems to point at) aren't the typical celebrity or rockstar stereotype, as in - they go out, get drunk and break shit - doesn't mean they are boring.

I disagree with this article, I mean - shut the fuck up, not every rockstar has to throw TVs off roofs and dance around in their underwear - but I would like to hear some crazy shit done by the band.

It would be quite entertaining.
Everyone has a stupid moment, everyone makes irrational desicions.
It's just more stories to tell...

"That's just not going to be enough scandal to make it on her own"...
That last sentence bothered me. It's telling people the wrong message.

Tbh I cannot relate to the wacky and lavish lifestyles that those 'stars' live. I just can't see myself doing that. I can't even think of what I would do with that much money. I just need like...a house, a good car, food, money in the bank, etc. and I'm good. Spending so much on pointless crap and living in excess never appealed to me. It's just not real life to me. That is why Paramore appeals to me. Not to mention their music.

Lol at him calling them boring. haha ok. what are you looking for? We all have our own lives to live!

garbage

this article is garbage and BORING! Hayley is exactly right. Who cares about scandal when you actually care about music? Has this guy ever seen a Paramore show and how un-boring they are? Or watched behind the scenes footage of the band who are grateful and gracious and lovely and wonderful and funny? This pisses me off because I like Katy Perry, I like Ke$ha, I love Lady Gaga. Most people I know and I believe even Hayley would agree that we are in awe of Gaga's VOICE and music not just the amazing performer and entertainer she is.

I'm pissed at this stupid article in this dinky online "newspaper"

Do some research BOZO!!!

This is nuts. HEY, we actually like a Band for the MUSIC and not for the drama. Is that like a breakthrough or something??? I hate TV and Radio. HATE IT. Hanson & Paramore are probably the least crazy people in the entertainment industry, and it is this (and obviously their music, and their fan connection) that makes me love them that much more. Screw drama and publicity stunts, bring on the tunes!!!

September 9 2010, 02:49:22 UTC 1 year ago

this article is just so frustrating... when did this business start loosing the music part of it? this is supposed to be about the music after all. even if we are just talking about their lifestyles behind the scenes and away from the songs and stage, paramore aren't boring in the slightest. i don't know any other band as committed and close with their fanbase as paramore. they make me feel so alive and blessed to be a fan everyday, as i'm sure they do for most of us on this community and in the fan community all around. that is something that could never be considered "boring" or "unexciting"; in fact i consider it to be one of the most special things about who i am. i know we feel like we are a part of it, at least for the most part. we know that feeling that zac, josh, hayley, jeremy, and taylor give us through their music, and we know that there is nothing that could ever compare to the love and support that is rampant in the paramore community. so if this guy wants a real story, i dare him to come talk to the fans. we could really show him what this band means, and what they have accomplished already at such an early stage in what will be a long and prosperous career.

i don´t understand what the journalist is getting to.. like, whats your point dude?? your writing about how a band is not scandalous? why would you want them to be like lady gaga or kesha or katy perry? because if they were, then you would critizise them anyways!!

[info]cherrytwinghost

September 9 2010, 03:21:21 UTC 1 year ago

just crap of an article. who said hayley is leaving the band and they're oh so controversial and what do you know about her life? whatever, who would even publish this?

thanks for posting anyways:)

and its doesn´t matter what they are doing in their personal lives..
they need to be awesome in live shows and good in music, thats it. they signed up for music not an autobiography.

September 9 2010, 03:23:46 UTC 1 year ago

I think this article is actually fairly accurate other than the fact that it doesn't consider the possibility that she stays with the band because she actually WANTS to.

[info]ibleedcolours

September 9 2010, 03:53:20 UTC 1 year ago

Probably one of the worst articles i've red. It says nothing about the band. What a load of shit.

September 9 2010, 03:55:53 UTC 1 year ago

I don't understand why people are offended by this calling Hayley's personal life "boring" because it IS. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that because there isn't, I think it's part of her appeal to a lot of people. They didn't call her boring.

[info]rj_bergman

September 9 2010, 10:31:26 UTC 1 year ago

Maybe Hayley wants her life to be boring, so she's not all over the front pages of crap or in the national inquirer, etc.
